I have questions about my child’s development, who should I contact?

Parents’ concerns about their children’s development should be taken seriously.

A developmental screening or evaluation can determine whether your child needs more in-depth testing (assessment) or if his/her development is within the typical range.

In Pinellas County you may want to contact West Coast Early Steps at (727) 767-4403 who provides developmental screenings and evaluations for very young children aged birth up to 3 years old.  For children older than 3 years old, you may want to contact the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) at (727) 793-2723.

Early Childhood Development

You do not need a referral from your pediatrician for an evaluation at West Coast Early Steps or FDLRS, but do ask the person who does the evaluation to share the results with your pediatrician.  Both organizations will help you identify what, if any, additional services or testing your child may benefit from. Be persistent in seeking an evaluation until all your questions have been answered.
